Common use
Gabapentin is primarily used to treat nerve pain associated with shingles (postherpetic neuralgia) and to control certain types of seizures in people with epilepsy. It is also prescribed off-label for conditions like restless legs syndrome and fibromyalgia. The drug works by affecting calcium channels in the nervous system, helping to stabilize nerve activity. It is not chemically related to other antiepileptic or analgesic medications.

Dosage and direction
Gabapentin is usually taken three times daily, with or without food. The starting dose is often low and gradually increased to minimize side effects. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Dosing must be individualized depending on the condition, patient’s age, and kidney function.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, mental health issues, or a history of substance abuse before using gabapentin. Do not stop the medication abruptly, especially if taken for seizures, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms or increased seizure risk. The drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness — avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you. Use caution in older adults and during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Contraindications
Gabapentin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or its components. It should be used with caution in those with renal impairment due to reduced clearance. The drug may not be suitable for patients with severe respiratory disorders without close monitoring. It is not intended for use in children under certain ages, depending on the indication.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, coordination problems, and drowsiness. Some users may experience swelling in the hands or feet, blurred vision, or tremors. Serious but rare effects include mood changes, suicidal thoughts, or allergic reactions. Seek medical attention if you experience trouble breathing, rash, or unusual behavioral changes.

Drug interaction
Gabapentin may interact with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, which can reduce its absorption — take gabapentin at least 2 hours after such antacids. Alcohol and sedatives may increase drowsiness and dizziness. It may also interact with opioids, increasing the risk of respiratory depression. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you're taking.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and resume your schedule. Do not take two doses at once. Consistency is important, especially for seizure control.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include extreme drowsiness, slurred speech, weakness, and in severe cases, respiratory depression. Seek emergency medical help if an overdose is suspected. Treatment is supportive and may include dialysis in patients with kidney dysfunction. Monitoring in a medical facility may be required.

Storage
Store gabapentin at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep the medication in its original packaging. Do not use after the expiration date. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
