Common use

Flunarizine belongs to the class of drugs called Ca 2+ channel blockers and is used to prevent migraine headaches, to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. The medication can be used in patients with peripheral vascular disease, vertigo, and epilepsy.



Dosage and direction

Flunarizine is an oral drug that comes in 10mg capsules which should be taken once daily in evenings preferably the same time each day to avoid the possibility of missing a dose. The usual dosage for adults is one capsule a day, for young children the dosage should be reduced.



Precautions

Before to start treatment with Flunarizine notify your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, breastfeeding, as the use of Flunarizine may cause birth defects in unborn babies and may also cause problems in newborn babies. This medication should be administered with cautiousness in patients who are aged 50 an above. Let your doctor know if you suffer serious liver, kidney or heart dysfunctions. Flunarizine treatment, even at recommended doses, can produce motor disturbances in subjects who did not show previous neurological deficits, so patients on Flunarazine therapy be followed closely and monitored at regular intervals so that extrapyramidal symptoms may be detected early.



Contraindications

Flunarizine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug and ones with a history of depression or pre-existing extrapyramidal disorders.



Possible side effect

At the beginning of treatment with Flunarizine you may experience drowsiness, heartburn, weight gain, and dry mouth, nausea, heartburn, dry mouth or anxiety may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. If these adverse reactions do not disappear inform your doctor about it. Such symptoms as a skin rash, depression, muscle aches, tremor, difficulty moving, abnormal or uncontrolled movements should be also considered side effects. Notify your doctor if you have any of above mentioned symptoms.

Sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, anti- seizure medications



Missed dose

If you missed a dose, take Flunarizine as soon as you remember it, considering that it is not too close to your next dosing schedule. If it is almost time of your next dose, it is better that you skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.



Overdose

Signs of overdose may include sedation and asthenia, central nervous system effects ( such as confusion, sedation, and agitation) and cardiovascular effects (e.g. tachycardia). In case of supposed overdose notify your doctor immediately as you may need an urgent medical help.



Storage

Store at room temperature, below 25 C (77 F) in places which are not available for children and pets.
